Technical Details of the Innovalouvres Motorised Louvred Roof

A brief history

image

Our Motorised Roof Louvre is truly unique. It was designed by a Chartered Professional Structural Engineer, McKechnie Aluminium Extruders in New Plymouth, and some of the most skilled installers and fabricators in the business, representing a significant evolution. It is a direct descendant of older louvre roof systems, which were in production for over 15 years. Leveraging all that experience, the Innovalouvres louvre roof has a refined and perfected design, ensuring it is a reliable bug-free solution.

Large Areas and Louvre Span

In Auckland, generally speaking, building consent is not required for areas up to 30sqm. For example, a space measuring 8 x 3.7 meters totals 29.6sqm and can proceed without consent, provided the design is approved by a Chartered Professional Engineer. It’s always wise to consult with your local council, as regulations may vary. We are in touch with professionals that can approve of these designs. You can choose a louvre roof of any size, but larger designs introduce additional considerations, such as the maximum span of the louvre blades. For instance, a 6 x 5-meter area might be best divided into two panels of 6 x 2.5 meters or two panels of 3 x 5 meters. Contact us today to explore our options. We offer one of the longest (if not the longest) spanning louvre blades available in the country.Contact us.

Optimal widths

Maximizing the width of your new louvre is generally more cost-effective. However, the width is constrained by the maximum span of the louvre blades, which varies based on the wind zone. For example, in HIGH wind zones, our standard louvre blades can span up to approximately 4 meters, with the span decreasing for higher wind zones. We also offer a specialized Mega louvre blade designed to handle significantly higher loads.Contact us today to discover the maximum span possible for your louvre system.

Optimal lengths

Similar to widths, maximizing the length of your Roof Louvre is generally more cost-effective. Unlike widths, the length of the louvre roof can be nearly limitless. We have completed several projects with louvre roofs exceeding 10 meters in length. Thanks to the expertise of our skilled engineers, we have developed innovative and structurally sound solutions to remove any restrictions on the length of Roof Louvres.

Louvre orientation

We can customize the louvre orientation and opening direction to suit your needs. For example, if your building faces North, the louvres can be positioned either North-South or East-West, and they can open in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. Consider what you want to control—whether it's the morning, midday, or evening sun. These details can be discussed during a site meeting or final measurement, but we also suggest exploring these options yourself to determine what works best for you.

Structural Support for Your Louvre

image

Your new Innovalouvres Roof Louvre can be supported in several ways, for example: with powder-coated aluminium posts, by attaching it to part of your building, utilizing existing posts, or installing it into a framed opening or engineered frame provided by others. But there are numerous methods for structurally supporting your louvre system. To determine the best solution for your needs, we recommend reaching out to us to find out how we can help.

Aluminium posts

These powder-coated aluminium posts are specifically designed to integrate seamlessly with the Roof Louvre system. While we offer standard designs, we can also create custom posts to meet your requirements. Aluminium posts can provide full support for a free-standing louvre or partial support when attached to the side of a building.

Posts by others

Your Roof Louvre can be supported by existing posts or those designed as part of an architectural or builder's plan. We are happy to collaborate with other professionals to ensure the best possible outcome for you.

Attaching to a building

Your Motorised Roof Louvre can be supported by fixing it to a wall or soffit of the building. If the building is still under construction, please reach out to us early on to ensure it is designed to accommodate these fixtures. We offer a range of standard solutions for most applications and can create custom brackets as needed.

Framed by others

Your Motorised Louvred Roof can be supported by attaching it to an engineered frame that is provided by others. If the building is still under construction, please get in touch with us at an early stage to ensure the design accommodates these details.

Extra custom-made

If your louvre requires special adjustments around features like chimneys, fireplaces, or protruding gutters, please contact us. We specialize in custom designs and are committed to finding solutions to meet your needs.

Recommendations

Height: We suggest a minimum height of 2.3 meters from the finished deck height to the underside of the louvre frame. This typically means that louvre systems won’t fit under soffits/eaves and are designed to start at the gutter line. We prefer this solution too, because it allows us to use a straightforward flashing to seal the seam between the louvre and house gutters. Furthermore, the louvre frame has the same height as the resulting in a visually impressive finish.

Colours: We suggest opting for lighter colours for your Louvre. Lighter shades create a greater sense of height when closed, tend to fade less over time, and absorb less heat compared to darker colours. Additionally, lighter colours reflect more light, helping to keep the enclosed area bright and inviting while still providing weather protection.

Control Automation: Your Innovalouvres Louvred roof operates using a premium actuator from Linak in Denmark and is controlled via a Teleco control system from Italy.

Electrical: Your Louvre system operates on 24V DC but requires a 230V AC supply for its transformer. This can be managed in two ways:

  • Option 1: The louvre system is delivered with an exterior-rated 3-pin 230V plug that can be connected to an existing power supply. The length of the cable is limited, so it's important to verify if this setup is feasible or desired during a site visit.
  • Option 2: The power supply can be integrated into the household's electrical system by a registered electrician. This can be arranged by the client, or Innovalouvres can facilitate the electrical work through one of our preferred electricians.

Plumbing: Your Louvre Roof comes with a perimeter gutter system and dropper. At this stage, a plumber will be needed to manage the downpipe, which can be brought down along the side of one of the supporting posts, through one of the posts, or integrated into the household stormwater system. The plumber can be arranged by the client, or Innovalouvres can recommend one of our preferred plumbers.

Lighting

Innovalouvres provides dimmable LED light strips that are remote-controlled and positioned inside the louvre frame. The light beams inward, reflecting off the louvre blades to create an aesthetically pleasing effect while also offering practical illumination.

Rain Sensor

Leave your home without the worry of leaving the louvres open. Our rain sensor automatically closes the roof louvres when it starts to rain. The sensor features multiple functions, including three sensitivity levels and an override option.
